Miles' Corvette goes the distance in Sportsman

NHRA SUMMIT RACING SERIES FINALS (Div. 2) - When Casey Miles purchased his Corvette from a local GM dealership in 2001, it had 23 miles on the odometer. By the time the car hit 36 miles, it had made its first pass down a dragstrip. Now, after winning Sportsman at the Division 2 NHRA Summit Racing Series Finals, Miles has to figure out how to get his prized Corvette to Pomona for the Summit Racing Series National Championship race.

"The car is street legal, but I only use it to race," said Miles, who won the 1997 track championship at Moroso Motorsports Park and currently competes in Stock in Division 2. "It's a really good car, and I know it well. I'm going to get it to Pomona somehow. I can run 13 seconds in the quarter-mile, and that would make it one of the fastest cars in the Sportsman class, so I think that would be an advantage. I still can't believe I'm going to Pomona. This is a dream come true. I'm like a little kid waiting for Christmas."

Miles and his Corvette also form an effective eighth-mile combination, and he proved in Gainesville, where he survived a number of close races to win the biggest title of his career.

"To tell you the truth, the whole race went pretty smooth," Miles continued. "My girlfriend, Michelle Lind, helped me keep track of the weather because this car is very sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. Other than that, everything went really well for us."

Though the event went smoothly for Miles, that doesn't mean he had it easy. Several of his races were decided by .02-second or less, including his semifinal bout with former division champ and Montgomery Motorsports Park representative Rod Johnson.

"That guy has used me as a speed bump before, so I didn't take him lightly," said Miles, whose 8.73 (8.72 dial) stopped Johnson's .04-over 8.09. "He was alongside me, on and off the throttle. I thought I might break out, so I went for the brakes, then my win light was on. I feel a little bad for him because he had me and gave it back. Our margin at the finish line was .0008-second. It was just too close."

In the final against New Bama Dragway's Brian Fredrickson, Miles had not reached the 60-foot clocks when he noticed that his win light was on, indicating a foul start on Fredrickson's part.

"As soon as I left, I saw him go red," said Miles, who admittedly missed the Tree with a .073, light. "I made sure I was green. My light wasn't real great, but I didn't want to take a chance on red-lighting. I felt bad for Brian, too. I went over and shook his hand after the final. Obviously, he could have beaten me if he had a green light. I just didn't want to jeopardize the race by pushing it too close."

As are the rest of the Summit Finals winners, Miles is looking forward to racing at historic Pomona Raceway.

"I plan to go out there and have fun," said Miles, whose supporters include girlfriend Michele and Moroso teammates Larry Doty and Lee Neal. "Even if I lose in the first round, I will have been a part of something special. That's something that they can never take away from me."
