Biloxi's Best Stay

Biloxi's Best Stay

You've come to the perfect place for a great Gulf Coast getaway.

Imagine settling into a hammock and letting the Gulf breezes sway you to sleep. At Green Oaks Bed & Breakfast, tucked behind a white picket fence and under the shade of massive live oaks, you can do just that.

This historic home along busy U.S. 90 in Biloxi, Mississippi, is certainly one of the most beautifully maintained and preserved structures along this stretch of coast. With all the development along this major highway, it's getting harder and harder to see the glorious remains of the way things used to look here.

The first drawings of the house were in 1826, but, according to owner Joe Malugen, it may have been here as early as 1806. The house was built by planters who came up to Biloxi from New Orleans to escape an outbreak of yellow fever.

Now guests visit to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. They've certainly come to the right place: This 3 ½-acre property (originally 640 acres) is resplendent with patterned gardens, a fountain, and semicircular drive in the rear, all shaded by 28 moss-veiled, gargantuan live oaks.

Rooms in the main mansion are spacious and impeccably decorated with antiques. In the front yard, the 100-foot-tall trees frame a marvelous view of the Gulf. There's also a comfortable guest cottage behind the house with two rooms. But the best ones, we think, are the two upstairs Gulf-view rooms. They share a broad, covered porch and cushy chairs that invite you to linger. All rooms offer modern amenities, including cable television, telephones, private baths, and wireless Internet.

Breakfast starts off the day superbly. Dishes such as Biloxi Benedict (poached eggs with hollandaise sauce, grits, and Cajun alligator sausage) encourage guests to savor their mornings.

During the day, you can hang a left on U.S. 90 and check out the charming seaside-cottage town of Bay Saint Louis, or turn right and drop in on one of the many casinos.

But we found it hard to leave Green Oaks. We think you'll relish every second you spend at this outstanding bedand-breakfast. You'll regret having to say farewell to this memorable property, but you're sure to come away with fond memories of your stay.
