Credit cards - Brief Article

Joan Goldwasser

This battle over late fees is more about principle than principal

Chase Manhattan Bank is the latest to get into hot water for setting an unreasonably early cut-off for posting credit card payments. To settle a lawsuit--without admitting any wrongdoing--Chase has agreed to push its posting deadline back from 9 A.M. to noon. It will also pay out $6.6 million to the 20 million Chase cardholders as reimbursement for charges imposed under the old system. But don't get too excited. If you were hit with such a charge between January 1993 and October 2000, you will automatically receive about $1. If you have been repeatedly nailed by late fees, though, it might make sense to file a separate claim for more. The deadline is January 31.
